Questies asked:

Hello Lenovo Thinkpad owners & techies alike,
I’m considering a Thinkpad but currently need a GOOD reason to spend a premium amount on it compared to other similar hardware fitted laptops which sometimes have better warranties (eg. Toshiba) and mostly cost a lot less.
But I’m hoping someone can give me a compelling argument and maybe even point out a budget Thinkpad that doesn’t cost almost twice the price of a decent laptop for my needs.
For this, I’m really counting on die-hard Thinkpad owners who have bought new TPs nearly every year & could help me out with a few models to consider currently!

I do have a fair amount of info on Lenovo Thinkpads and I’m including it below but I hope you can help me with extra advice or things I may not have considered, thanks!

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT LENOVO & THINKPADS

Lenovo is a top producer of laptops but Thinkpads are no longer associated with IBM and some people think this has been a drawback for Thinkpads.

Thinkpads are rigorously tested (milspec) & come with special h/w features like liquid drain-holes and Mg casing.
Counterpoint here is I’m pretty careful with my stuff anyway.

Thinkpads are well engineered software-wise as well and have been tailored to reduce boot up shutdown speed and other smart s/w features.
Counterpoint here is I’m tech savvy enough to reduce bloat-ware etc and buy a stick of ram if needed and am not sure the efficiency on other new laptops is so bad anyway

Thinkpads have an IPS display (I think this is only on high-end models)?
Counterpoint is I don’t know enough about it but assume it’s comparable to other glossy bright displays, ie what is super great about it?

Thinkpads can generally be light & with longer battery though this goes towards high-end models.
Counterpoint here is I’m still looking for a budget Thinkpad so this may not be a factor for me :P

Ok so the bottom-line is why Thinkpads and which one?
(esp under 1K if possible with coupons)

Also what’s with Ideapads & other Lenovo models (cheaper) are they comparable in Thinkpad technology or not?

Why not other comparable laptops, for eg. my bro just bought a brand new Toshiba e305 which is really well fitted and has a 2 year warranty for a pretty good price ~ $900.

Anyway, really hoping someone can help me out as you can see I have considered plenty of reasons just never owned one and I’m hoping someone who has can give me good objective reasons to consider a Thinkpad.
Thanks.

I was getting a job this summer and I was going to save up for a laptop. My budget would be under $1200. I was looking for one that i can use for simple functions like typing documents, listen to music, and browsing the web, but can also use software like Photoshop, Autodesk, and Adobe After Effects. Gaming would be nice, but is not really important. Any idea on something i could use?

So I’m a photographer and I desperately need a laptop for storage and editing and such. I also would like something stylish (preferably white!!!!) but also something that runs fast and has a decent battery life. I would get a mac but I can’t afford it at the moment… so I would like to know what I should get. I know nothing about processors or software or anything. my budget is around 500 dollars.. If you could find a dell, that would be even better. but im open to anything

I desparately need a laptop with (preferably) XP Pro and budget left over to buy MS Office ’07 (also on ebay). I’m looking at refurbs on ebay and Dell Outlet but my budget’s only $300 max on the computer (with XP Pro installed) and less than $100 on the Office software. Am I being realistic? Or stupid?

razi asked:

I need laptop to run as much virtual machines as I can , so too me the most important thing is RAM and processor speed , plus good battery life around 4 hours (minimum).I don’t care much about Graphics , thumb impression support, build in web cam etc.

I will be running following Software
———————————————————-
1. Windows Server 2008 x64 bit

2. Multiple Virtual Machines (each will take around 1.5 GB of RAM)

3. Windows 2008 Hyper V (not sure Core 2 DUO support its as Hyper V required hardware accelerated virtualization support)

Also want to know following
—————————————

1.Is there any way i can buy a laptop (Dell , HP etc) with bare minimum (like no OS , 512 RAM etc) and then adjust RAM on my own, plus OS I will install on my own (so dont need pre installed OS).

2. Did any one of you recommend DELL M6400 (price is just too much for me at the moment , but want to know any ways)

BTW I am located in Singapore.
For The First Answerer
———————————
8GB is not that uncommon Vendors like (IBM,DELL,HP) have models with 8GB (just google it out), but where my question comes from , is the cost.
Moreover 8 GB RAM is is not that much , when you have to work on 4 to 5 VMs (with Windows Server 2008 , etc) at the same time, which is the case for me.
Desktop is not an option at all as it limits the mobility.
Thanks any ways for answering.
