Last night my brother installed “Marine Sharpshooter Trilogy” on my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite) and this afternoon it crashed. It displayed an error message saying that a “software add-on” had caused some sort of problem and Windows was not able to start. What steps should I take to obtain my information? Would it be cheaper to just buy a new computer and transfer the information there instead of repairing my old one? Does anyone know any low-budget computer shops, websites, or toll-free phone numbers I can call?

mmmmmmm asked:

I will be getting a laptop for school next year and I’m sick of Windows and definitely ready to try a Mac. All I will really use it for is:

-Surfing internet and watching live baseball games
- Email
-Instant messaging, preferably AIM
-Write papers, powerpoint presentations, and that stuff…
-Listening to music…Itunes
- If it is still working 3 years from now maybe run some software for my home office on it.

so as you can see I wont be doing anything really intense. But Im sick of Windows and heard Vista has a lot of problems, although they might be sorted out by the time school comes around. I know Macs are a little more expensive, but it does fit into my budget. Ive spoken to people who got “great deals” on laptops for like $599, only to see it die within a year. I believe you get what you pay for. So I will be using a laptop for all of the above functions, but I also want a GOOD laptop that will not die after 1 year.
But since I never had a Mac I just want to make sure I can do everything I want to on it….and Im pretty sure I could.

Thanks to all who answer!

LD asked:

I need a sturdy notebook with CDRW/DVDRW combination drive, CORE 2, at least 1 GB…15.4 inch screen and a nice sized keyboard. My budget is set to $1,500.00 Please note the software at my school does not work with MACs. I was thinking of a “Denovo”…or perhaps a Dell Latitude series …820. Any suggestions?
I am going to be lugging this thing with me everywhere, so while I don’t really care how “cool” the notebook looks, I want to make sure it won’t come apart after a year or so of usage.

THANKS!
Sorry…I meant Lenovo…not Denovo…

J asked:

The fan on the card hasn’t died, the heat sync still works and I even have a spliced case fan right next to it, but if I try to run any graphics intensive games it will consistently crash with a randomly colored blank screen and the only way to keep going is a hard reboot. The graphics core runs about 120 F normally and at 140 F during heavy use. Drivers are a mystery because the newer ones don’t work at all (won’t detect) and the version I’m using now is the version that came with the original software.

I’m currently a college student in need of a laptop for some 3D animation classes. I need to know which laptop would perform best with these software: adobe acrobat, adobe flash cs3 pro, adobe indesign cs3(art&graphics), adobe photoshop cs3(art&graphics), apple final cut pro, and autodesk maya. I heard their new versions for some of the software, so I would like to base it of the new versions. Also note that I’m on a budget, has to less that $900.

Cameron N asked:

I have a lot of Q’s so dont feel obligated to answer all of them. I will be using the internet for school and web surfing. The most intensive thing that ill prob b doing is having a webchat while surfing the internet or writing a paper or both. I wont be playing any demanding games. These are the questions that i have:

1. What is the difference between the n and g wireless cards? Should I spend extra money on an N card, will I notice a difference? If I get a slower processor (T5800) then will a G card be just as fast (my router is N)?

2. Is the p7350 worth the extra 75 dollars? Will I notice a difference, how much of a difference? Would I see more performance if I upgraded to three gigs or ram and a 16 percent increase in battery life.

3. How much of a difference do LED screens make? What is the battery increase (%)? Is it worth an extra 75 dollars?
-What do you know about HP infinity displays? How much extra glare is there?

4. I know that the P7350 uses 10 watts less energy (25 watts) than the T5800 (35 watts) how much battery life is this in %?

5. What do you know about Blu-ray? Will it be soon obsolete or will it be sticking around?
- Will I have enough battery life to watch an entire Blu-ray movie on my laptop without my laptop being plugged in?

6. Will I notice a difference in WXGA and WSXGA on a 14.1 inch screen? How about on a 15.1 inch screen?

7. Will using a 32-bit OS boost my performance if I’m not using 3gigs of ram, how about 4 gigs of ram?

8. How much will a 7200rpm hard drive boost my performance. It is $125 to upgrade?

9. Do I need virus protection like Norton or can I use the free virus removal software of the internet?

10. Will I notice more of boost in battery life with an LED screen (14.1”) or a processor that uses 10 less watts.

11. If anyone has an HP dv4t, how bad is the fan noise?

Abraham asked:

At work I use a Dell D530 running at 2.00GHZ but i believe its core 2 duo with 1.99GB RAM and 111GB HD.

I purchased a Toshiba Satellite L505-S5966 (running at 2.00GHZ 3GB RAM and 320GB HD) I needed something with more memory and HD space for my Blender 3d projects as well as my after effects project. I havent opened the box yet because im not sure if this laptop will work any better than the D530. though the toshiba has more everything than the Dell i’m not sure if im going to end up with the same sappy performance due to the difference in 2.00 GHZ in Core2Duo vs 2.00GHZ in “Dual Core”.

Do you think it will do what I want? I had about $600.00 and I got the toshiba because for the price it had the best specs.

What is your opinion on this matter?

By The Way: I am a web developer and software programmer, but I use After effects to give more life to my buttons and animations in flash none of the animations run for more than 5 minutes at the most (if that).

Any advice, or opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks!

Toby Gasco
