So many to choose, which ones perform the best? If I can get both for free that would be awesome (on a tight budget). What I hear is that there are great spyware programs for free, but I’d have to purchase an Anti-virus programs (won’t have a problem with that). This is for my home computer.
Ok, everyone. Thank you very, very much for helping me out. Because I’ve received so many great answers, I am opting to have the voting community choose the best one. All of you are awesome!

My mom is having this battle with me on which software to use to protect our computer. Now since we have had Norton 360 for about a year (we have 6 days left), my mom is saying that we should “Just get a free antivirus program because Norton 360 isnt in our budget right now”.
Would AVG free edition be a good replacement to cover for Norton 360?

We bought Exchange Server and will be deploying it soon. We just need to decide on virus protection for our incoming emails. The two contenders so far are the Barracuda Spam Firewall 200 and GFi MailSecurity. We have about 80 users.
To me, the advantages of each seem to be as follows:
GFi MailSecurity is primarily designed specifically for virus scanning and comes with 2 good virus-scanning engines (and we already have a Bayesian spam filter that does well for us, so we do not necessarily *need* spam filtering).
The Barracuda costs less initially, costs less per year to maintain the updates, and does not take up resources on any server.
To me, the cons of each seem to be as follows:
GFi is a little more expensive.
Barracuda seems designed primarily to filter spam and scans for viruses as a secondary objective. (It is a Spam Firewall).
If suggesting a different product altogether, just remember we are on a budget–and that is why you do not already see Trendmicro listed.

The security software I have says no viruses or spyware, but I am not sure if it’s bad hardware, bad software, lousy security, wrong settings, a worm, a horse, or one of the other virtual ailments. I can’t budget a new cpu at this time and the internet has become a cornerstone of every day life in my home so a solution must be found.

Like, I basically just want something simple. Just the Microsoft Office, and virus protection, right? My friend suggested Open Microsoft, since the software is expensive, but I don’t know how to do it. As for the Norton anti virus, I don’t know how to get it too, and I don’t know the price for both softwares. I’m a student who really doesn’t have a big budget for these.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop for school and it comes with a 30-day free trial of McAfee security software. The problem is, I’ll be on a very tight budget once classes start, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford to buy any security software once the free trial is up. Do you think I’ll be okay without it? I don’t use any type of file sharing software (like Limewire, etc.), and I try to steer clear of any shady looking websites, so I don’t think I’ll end up accidentally downloading a virus or something. So do you think I’ll be okay without any security software?
