Is it really necessary to have security software on your computer? Is it okay not to have any?

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop for school and it comes with a 30-day free trial of McAfee security software. The problem is, I’ll be on a very tight budget once classes start, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford to buy any security software once the free trial is up. Do you think I’ll be okay without it? I don’t use any type of file sharing software (like Limewire, etc.), and I try to steer clear of any shady looking websites, so I don’t think I’ll end up accidentally downloading a virus or something. So do you think I’ll be okay without any security software?

I think as long as you do not download anything or open any unknown email attachments you might be ok…but I wouldn’t chance it personally.

McAfee, Norton, most of the major brands do nothing but slow your computer down. Go on google and search for free antivirus, programs like Avast work very well and won’t cost you a dime, also download “Spybot search and destroy” it will get rid of all the crap avast does not. Not only are these programs free, they work better. Uninstall McAfee before you install Avast.
