One alternative is Google stuff: Calendar, Docs&Spreadsheets, etc. You might even get yourself a domain name ($5 to $7 a year, which, if you think about it, is less than the price of a paperback book these days). Then get into Google Apps for Your Domain (or GAfYD (as some affectionately call it).

Another alternative is to gather some packages and use them in unison. Perhaps you’d use Thunderbird+Lightning add-on for your email/calendaring/contacts and OpenOffice.org for your Docs and Spreadsheets. Perhaps you’d use Kplan the little-known gem Kplan for your calendaring. Or look into IBM Lotus Symphony for some of your needs.

Or do it all through Microsoft Office, of course (bleah, IMHO but that’s me, kick me). Or do it all through MacOSX analogs to Office (someone else will kick me on that account…OOF! OOf! Oof! oof!)

My personal opinion, after all these years, is, (sorry), don’t put all yer eggs in one basket. That is, diversify. Take the (unfortunate as it is) extra pain to use software from different sources and do YOUR OWN coordination. That way, you get the cream of the crop, and don’t depend on one company’s crap when problems arise, which they surely will.
